Evergreen Forest - Page 9 Empty Re: Evergreen Forest

Derek wondered whether it would be wise. To make the alpha unburden herself and then have to listen to his story. His was not always an easy one to hear, at least he knew he hated telling it. Perhaps he could help the female, and then distract her from his own telling, yes that would work.

All he knew though was that an alpha had to be at her best at all times, should she snap under the pressure because of her emotions, things would go wrong, and to tell the truth, he had always had a soft spot for the alpha females of this pack. Not that he loved them all and wish to be mated, no that ship had sailed, but, he had always been far more close to the alpha females, and the one alpha male, then he had been to any other wolf in the pack, besides Palla, but that was a different story.

And if he dug down to the very core of it, he hated the silence, not that he was a talkative wolf, but he missed not having someone to confide in. Someone to laugh with, and Rune and Incendiu were gone, he was a lone, and he truly needed a friend, now more than ever.

"I would very much enjoy the walk, and the talk. Wolves my size need the exercise." He stood and shook out his fur, before giving a respectful smile and a wave of his tail indicating for her to take the lead.

Evergreen Forest - Page 9 28k3ey1

"Huh. For you hun, it’s no fur off my back. Shall we be off then?"

That was enough of a response for Taru. The pair would be off to scavenge up a meal for the starved female and perhaps she could finally rest? It seemed like a pleasant idea to say the least. So pleasant, the wolf found her legs giving out and her body sinking to the floor. She could feel the numb, soothing sensation of her body receiving a break flowing through her bones. How tired Taru normally felt was nothing new, especially after becoming a loner, but the relief she felt from simply lying down was still phenomenal. Sometimes, when the aching in her bones grew to be incredibly frustrating, the female began to believe that it was her emotions which burdened her so. It's because you don't let them out. Her theory had been developed simply out of irritation of her own weaknesses. What you really feel sinks into your bones. That's where the pain comes from. As if your complete lack of strength wasn't enough. She snorted as her head cleared a little.

Sprawled out on the warm spring grass, Taru tried to keep from thinking about too much. Her body was exhausted, yet her mind seemed to be working harder than ever. The dull throb of a headache pulsed faintly as she closed her eyes. What had happened while she had been gone? Who was leading the group now? She could only remember the death of both dominant wolves, which had been recent back in her time, and did not recall who had been stepping up. Everything was a blur of faces, having been an emotional wreck before her departure. Elysia, Rune, and Maiara... How'd we continue on without you guys? The thought was a depressing one, but one that did not contain the real sorrow she had felt in the days after their deaths. No words would ever be able to explain that grief. Yet, as she thought of them and the pack they (and her) had left behind, Taru remained content.

When in times of hardships, the female often resorted to thinking of the pack, but now that she was back, her mind was still plagued by their faces. Some more than others, specifically those that had been truly close to the navy blue female. And who had been closer to her than Gale? None. This was the main reason she could not escape him, not walk away from him. She had tried, for many months, but now back, Taru found a separate peace she hadn't felt in so long. It was something that could not be replaced, like she had believed, with solitary traveling. The safety Gale and the Banishing Winds had provided, along with so many other feelings, could be found no where else. That was something Taru had discovered the hard way.

    [lame, my apologies xD]

(I cannot apologize enough for the tardiness of this post. I will take this time to say that my activity may drop considerably once the next school year starts. For now, I give you the first of many old yarns.)

"So, this lion and the shepherd?"

One notched ear swiveled in the direction of the scholar beside her. Jackie matched the she-wolf’s pace easily with her lanky limbs as they began their journey, the pain in her injured paw now completely vanished. ”Aye, this ‘ere’s a fine tale,” she replied, a small chuckle sounding. Her golden eyes were alight with the pleasure of having an audience for once. After clearing her throat, the rust-colored rogue began her story. ”The lion, ye see, is an awf’lly proud creature. He walks with ‘is ‘ead held high and chest puffed out, lookin’ down ‘is nose at anythin’ that dares cross in front of ‘im. Few fellas ‘ave the moxy to challenge ‘im. E’en fewer live t’say they did.” Jackie took a pause for breath. Her tone had carried hints of admiration as she described the beast. In a way, she was also describing her own character. The notion brought a crooked smile to her maw. After a side-long glance to the doctor, the she-wolf continued. ”This lion, ye might be thinkin’, is quite a mean bloke. It goes without sayin’ that when ‘e got an acacia thorn stuck fast in ‘is toe, the lion was rightfully vexed. Ye might be askin’ now- Why’s a monster such as ‘im so rankled by a sliver? and I will remind ye: he’s a very proud creature.” Another pause was taken. Her eyes had lost their glint and were now significantly darker. ”He couldn’t stand to ‘ave a weakness, ‘specially if others saw it. Despite all ‘is strength an’ power, the lion couldn’t get the blasted thing out ‘imself, an’ so, ‘e had to do the unthinkable: ask for help.” Jackie paused again. Her voice had taken on a flinty edge with those last few words and her eyes were hard as stone.

Briefly, she allowed her mind to wander back to when she had first approached the scholar. It had chafed the red wolf terribly to admit her weakness to someone she barely knew. If the blasted sliver of wood hadn’t hurt like it did, her pride would most likely have forced her to go on until the nickname “Tripod” was not just an ironic joke. This thought brought a deep frown to her muzzle. For a large portion of her life, Jackie had relied on her fortitude and tenacity for survival. She had walked with her head held high and her chest puffed out. Her bright eyes regarded everyone with disdain and hauteur. Very few dared stand up to her. Even fewer lived to tell the tale. And yet, a miniscule splinter had reduced the bandit to a beggar. The frown deepened into a scowl at these further musings.

With a slight jolt, Jackie realized she had fallen silent for several moments while her mind ran away with her. She cleared her throat again and cast another side-long glance to the doctor before picking up the story again. ”Lucky for ‘im, a shepherd crossed his path not but a day after. Now this shepherd, ye see, was a kindly fellow. The flock ‘e kept was ne’er known to be ill or in a bad way.” Jackie’s voice had resumed its initial lilting cadence, but a cynical edge was beginning to creep in. ”An’ so, when the lion spotted the shepherd, ‘e played ‘im like a harp. He fawned o’er the boy, wagged ‘is tail an’ all, as if to say: I am but a lowly beggar, seekin’ charity. O’course, the good-hearted sprout took pity on the beast an’ picked up ‘is massive paw, laid it flat on ‘is knee, an’ plucked the offendin’ splinter out. No longer ailin’, the lion returned to ‘is own patch.” The red wolf took a moment to navigate over another fallen log. She took extra care in scaling this one, and when no slivers found themselves buried in her toes, Jackie grinned triumphantly.

Her story continued. ”Now, I’ll say again- this shepherd’s flock was mighty impressive. Many men were quite covetous an’ resentful of ‘im. One fellow went as far as denouncin’ the shepherd t’ the village guard. The charge was hogwash, o’course, but this was a different time. Our poor shepherd boy was cast to the lions for ‘is troubles. That was considered justice.” These last few words were practically growled out. Her voice was low and hard as she continued. ”The whelp was dropped in a pit with naught but a barred door in the far wall. After ‘is supposed crime and sentence were read to ‘im once more, the grate was lifted an’ the lion released. Rather than attack the boy, ‘owever,” Jackie paused, perching atop a small boulder, ”the beast walked calmly up to ‘im, wagged ‘is tail, an’ held up a paw. It just so ‘appened that said lion was none other than the one ol’ sheep-boy ‘ad helped out. Ye might be wonderin’ now- If the lion was such a miserly fellow, why didn’t ‘e kill the shepherd? She leapt from the boulder and resumed her pace. ”Aye, the animal was decidedly not a nice bloke, but where ‘e wasn’t kind, ‘e was just. Beneath that icy glare an’ fierce temper, there was a decent sense of right an’ wrong. The lion felt it was not just to dispatch the boy after ‘e had so gently pulled the thorn from ‘is toe, an’ so, the beast did not lift a claw against the shepherd.” The red wolf’s tone had grown almost wistful with the last few sentences. This story’s sense of compassion had always baffled her, no matter how many times the tale was recounted to her. There was no small amount of irony in the fact that this was one of her favorite yarns.

Quickly, she stopped her musings and resumed the account, her tone easy and light. ”No matter the length of time they remained in that pit, the lion never once spilled the boy’s blood. News o’ this strange happening traveled quickly. Upon hearing ‘bout the ordeal, the King ‘imself pardoned the shepherd and had the beast returned to ‘is forest.” A crooked grin twitched at the corners of her mouth. ”I’ve ‘eard it said by many an old salt that in a faraway land, there is an elderly man with the grandest flock o’ sheep ya ever did see. Guarding this flock, it’s also said, is a massive lion with teeth of ivory an’ a thick coal mane. The old shepherd is the only one who can lay a hand on this animal, and no rustler dares touch but a single ewe for fear of losing an arm.” With the end of her tale, Jackie cast a glance to the scholar, curious about what she would say. It surprised her, really, that she had even agreed to recount this story in the first place. The rogue had only been present in the area for a short time, yet she was already telling old yarns to wolves she knew next to nothing about. This thought caused an almost pensive frown to crease her muzzle.

(In case you aren't familiar with it, the story is actually one of Aesop's fables.)

Evergreen Forest - Page 9 Empty Re: Evergreen Forest

Post by Iocus August 12th 2012, 7:31 pm

"Of course. We'll start over there, towards the edges. Prey will be a bit more alert because of the pack, but we should be able to catch them unawares the same."

And with a well-aimed maneuver of his tail, Gale was off without a second glance, leaving Iocus and Taru to watch him disappear into the trees. The pair was alone once again. Suddenly, Taru sank down unto her belly. It seemed she had finally succumbed to utter exhaustion. Iocus pried his eyes away from Gale's retreating form to look down at her. His heart filled with pity for the she-wolf, and something else.

He padded over to her side slowly, stopping beside her head. Without looking at her, he bent his own muzzle down to breathe into her ear, "Rest for now. We'll bring you something nice." And with a hurried smile, the yearling scurried off into the woods after the Guardian.

    --

As the trees grew denser and the she-wolf fell away behind him, Iocus soon realized he had lost the other male. His scent was nowhere to be found. Fast ol’ bugger Iocus thought with a frustrated snort. He slowed his lope into a relaxed walk. The sounds of the forest re-emerged as he settled down.

On second thought, it would be much easier to hunt alone. He knew Gale didn’t like him much, and hunting with the brute would be a tense affair. And although Iocus would never admit it, he was not a very good hunter. Perhaps it was because of his youth and inexperience, or his lackluster concentration skills. Whatever the case, Iocus was rarely successful in making the kill. He would rather Gale and Taru not see him in action. He preferred to work in peace.

And with that, Iocus set about analyzing the hidden trails of the flora around him with the aid of his trusted nose.

Ever smiled warmly and released the trapped rabbit, allowing it to stare up at the male wolf with weary, widened eyes. It rose up on it's hind legs and batted at his nose, before scampering away. She turned to Kall and crouched, indicating she wanted to play with his toy also. "Catch me if you can!" She called, before launching off her paws, running towards the rabbit. Her speed accelerated as she barked playfully.

Kall's ears shot up at the immediate thought of a game.
Tag! He loved playing tag!
He wiggled his butt then bounced in a quick circle before finally running after the wolf, yipping with joy. It had been so long since Kall had seen another wolf and longer still since one would play his most favorite game.

Ever laughed and whirled around, shooting past him and going to the other side, abandoning the rabbit. She bounded across the grass, her paws barely touching the soft ground. She turned her head slightly to look at Kall, while at the same time, still running. She smiled, and wagged her tail. "You having fun?"

Kall gave the happiest of barks and hopped after her, He caught up to her and started bouncing in a circle around her.
"Yes!" he exclaimed, "This is so much fun!"
He got down on his back on the ground and started rolling all over the place, unable to contain the excitement he felt from finally having a buddy.

Ever leaped over his body and landed beside him, flopping on her back. She smiled and stared at the sky. "Me too." Those two words seemed insignificant to her, as if they were too short, or had no meaning. She kept it at that, nonetheless, and glanced over at him. Her tail wagged slowly, and her body tilted to the side. She pressed her muzzle into the soft grass, and took in the smell of pine and leaves. She lifted her head and sat up, once again looking up at the sky.

Kall sat up as well and turned his gaze to the sky as Ever did. He cocked his head as he watched the birds flying around. Leaves blew around all above them and strange white shapes drifted across the blue in the distance.
Kall seemed suddenly intrigued and confused at those weird shapes.
He turned his gaze to the other wolf. "What... What are those white thingies?" he asked, his tail wagging in anticipation of any answer she'd be willing to give.

Ever cocked her head to the side and narrowed her blue eyes, trying to see them more clearly. "Some kind of white bird, I think." She replied, still unsure of what exactly they were. She suddenly remembered. "Doves. They must be doves." She thought kindly of those birds. They were meant as signs of love, she thought. She sat up straighter and tossed her head back and howled softly, mostly to herself. While the howl had no meaning, she hadn't done it in awhile.

"Doves," Kall repeated, knowing a bit about the bird and remembering they were quite lovely.
His tail rolled out of his mouth as the thought made him happy. So many doves there were floating through the sky. Kall's tail wagged happily with the thought.
He soon shifted his attention to Ever as she let out a loud howl. He wasn't sure why she did, but it seemed to fit somehow and the only thing that would make it better was if he joined in.
He tossed his head back and followed her lead with one long drawn out howl.
He imagined he was signalling to the doves above with it.

Ever let her howl reverberate, then as she heard him join in, she let it trail off, untill it was just a memory of a song. She licked his muzzle in appreciation, and wagged her tail. She laid down on her belly, and watched as the birds disapeared from sight.

Saphera studied this wolf Falco if she got the chance she wanted to run. She then studied the area around her she saw the places she could run or hide. Saphera actually saw a couple of places where she could have a better chance of fighting. She looked back at this wolf she then stopped looking around her had suspected her being scared before. She sat there waiting to get to know the territory after all this could mean she could escape if she got to know the territorty well enough.

Kall panted happily, his tail wagging quickly back and forth.
He laid down next to Ever and stared up at the sky with her. After a while he glanced around, watching other things.
He saw some leaves drift off a nearby tree and hopped over to watch them. He barked playfully and snapped at the various leaves before sitting down in the middle of them. He looked back at Ever and wiggled his butt before trotting back to her.
Perhaps playing with leaves was a bit childish, he thought.
But he loved leaves.

Ever smiled and wagged her tail, her blue eyes softening. "I can guess you like to play." She said, raising her paw to bat at his muzzle lightly. "I like to play, too." "Yes"

Cinnamon felt giddy, the blood in her veins rushing through her body at far too great a pace for her to cope with. Mouth slightly open she looked at Gliron, matching him eye for eye, yet quite unable to process all that small word meant. He had accepted her.

She had a mate
She was no longer alone

He had accepted her

Slowly she breathed out, calming her racing heart. Then she covered the final bit of ground between them and began, carefully, lovingly, to groom his wounded side with her tongue
"Thank you" It was a whisper only, for she didn't trust her voice and she carried on grooming.
Something however, made itself known and she stepped sideways to look at her mate, and how wonderful that thought sounded, properly.
"Why are you frightened, Gliron?"

"Yes," he answered, "I love playing. Playing is my-" he cut himself off as a leaf fluttered by and he snapped at it happily. He flopped over and rolled around next to Ever.
"Heehee!!" he exclaimed, almost laughing, "You're fun to play with! I think you're a good friend!"

Ever smiled, and wagged her tail. <font color=966939>"Thank you, Kall."</font> She got to her feet and pounced on him lightly, her eyes shining playfully. <font color=966939>"You are a great friend, too."</font> With that, she licked his nose and hopped off him, going over to sit by a tree. She hung her head and stared at the ground. <i>Friend. . . Why did that word seem so important to her now?</i> She tried to remember. . . But her thoughts were fuzzy and distant. She wondered if she would ever see her past again.
She never had had a friend. Someone to share her secrets with, to play with. Now she had one. Her eyes twinkled, and she smiled, softlly saying to herself: <font color=966939>"Friend. That sounds about right."</font>

Kall sat, his tail thumping on the ground, as he watched Ever.
"Thanks," he said back, bobbing his head back and forth. He always moved a lot when he was happy.
He never remembered ever having a friend before. He always WANTED friends, sure, but most wolves and other animals seemed just annoyed by his playfulness.
He liked to hop around other wolves, but he remembered once when one of them got so bad he tried to bite Kall.
That was scary.
But this Ever was really nice. And she was such a pretty wolf, Kall thought.
He hoped they'd be best friends forever.

Thoughts racing through her head, she stood and paced in front of the tree. Her nose pointed downward, she dug her nails into the dirt with every small step she took. She stared at the blue sky, then sat back down, tired. She glanced at Kall, then smiled. It was nice to have a friend.

Cayden kept silent as he coruched in the brush, keeping silent and calm. The rabbit was just ahead of the male foraging for food. Of course he would be dinner for this hungry canine. He leapt, hunching his chest together and extending his front legs to collide with the poor innocent creature. He bit easily down upon it's neck holding it there until it gave up the fight. He padded away, his grey gaze wtahcing for anyone to talk to. Right about now he'd be sharing this meal with his true love Nari. He had to stop thinking of her someday it would outright kill her. I'm so sorry Nari he thought with a short whimper I have to let you go.. He looked up to the sky hoping that she was somewhere. His appitiete was lost as he stared at the bedraggled rabbit with non interest. He picked it up once again before padding back to the spot he'd killed it. He dug into the ground, dropping the rabbit into the hole then covering it up. Better to let it decay under ground to help the earth then some savage animal tear it to pieces.
